The field includes five players from North Texas and 14 others with ties to the Lone Star State.
The field for the Veritex Bank Championship at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington will have a distinct Texas accent when it begins Thursday.
Five players who grew up in North Texas are vying for the $180,000 first prize from the $1 million purse for the Korn Ferry Tour event: Parker and Pierceson Coody (Plano), Martin Flores (Fort Worth), Paul Haley II (Dallas) and Ben Kohles, whose family moved to North Carolina when he was 10.
Other Texans in the field are Bronson Burgoon (The Woodlands), Chad Campbell (Andrews), Zack Fischer (Texarkana) and Chandler Phillips (Huntsville).
Including the Coodys and Cole Hammer, who all played at Texas, there are 14 players with collegiate ties to the state: SMU alums Noah Goodwin and Mac Meissner, Texas A&M’s Burgoon and Phillips, TCU’s Paul Barjon and Hayden Springer, Baylor’s Kyle Jones, Rice’s Mitchell Meissner, UNT’s Thomas Rosenmueller, UTA’s Zack Fischer and UTEP’s Roger Sloan.
Grant Hirschman and Tom Whitney, who now call Dallas home, are also in the field.
The front nine and back nine will be flipped so that the tournament concludes on what is normally the 605-yard No. 9. Also, the course usually plays to a par 72 but will be par 71 for the tournnament, with the 512-yard No. 4 (No. 13 normally) playing to a par 4 instead of a par 5.
